Skywalker I was secretly pleased that, for various technical reasons, it had not been possible to complete the sound mix of the cinema trailer for YES that Daniel Goddard and I had cut in London. It had taken several attempts to arrive at a cut I was really pleased with; discovering how much information to give away and how much to withhold in order to create dramatic tension and, above all, an appetite for more. But the technical hold-ups combined with my travel schedule meant that the mix was now to take place at Skywalker Ranch, somewhere I had long wanted to visit. We rolled up at the ranch, set in a lush rolling landscape, were warmly greeted by the mixer Kent Sparling and then ushered through an airy lobby into the mixing studio. We worked happily through the day as the ranch slowly filled up with journalists arriving for a lavish party for Star Wars III. It was interesting to see how money gets spent in such different ways on films of such wildly varying budgets. But somehow our end of the scale felt satisfying, though its hard not to let out a little sigh of envy at the sheer luxury of space and privacy at the ranch, not to mention the utterly delicious, magical acoustic on the stage where the Kronos Quartet, amongst others, often record and mix their albums. back |
