'His' voice & Medium
Hello Sally,

I went to the screening of 'Yes' in London a few weeks ago, and really enjoyed it. There were a couple of things I wanted to ask of you at the Q&A session, but I was too shy - So I'm attempting an e-mail instead! What I wanted to know was: I noticed that 'He' was the only character not to express his 'inner' voice. (Audibly, I mean). I thought this gave the impression that his was the 'honest' character - the 'true' character, if you like. Was this planned from the script stage - or did it evolve during editing? Also, a question from a friend: Given your small budget, was the entire piece shot on film? Given the excellent depth and grading, it certainly looked that way to me. (Although, I'm not sure about the 'CCTV' footage). Finally - so glad to see that you also describe yourself as an 'editor'. I too am an editor, who is also a writer - and I get COMPLETELY fed-up with people assuming I mean a script editor, when I tell them what I do! Wish you all success with the film - and I look forward to seeing what's next.

'His' voice
There was an earlier version of the script that had some ‘inner voice’ moments for ‘He’. Some were recorded. But in the cutting room it became clear that they were unnecessary. His way of speaking permits some of those ‘inner’ moments to become audible in conversation.

Your friend’s question : everything was shot on film (super 16mm), with the exception of the cctv footage, the ‘confession’ scene where ‘She’ is speaking into the lens, and some images of Cuba, filmed with the camera you see her using. After the film was edited, a 35mm negative was generated digitally at ‘Digimages’ in Paris (of all the chosen material ) where I then worked on it with a wonderful team, before going through a final phase chemically at the laboratory Éclair, also in Paris.
