Russian inspirations
Dear Sally,

First of all I have to say that your film 'YES' is one of few films, which has touched me profoundly. It opened my eyes, filled me with emotions, made me cry and it inspired me deeply, being a young filmmaker myself. To me, one of the best things about the film is that it felt extremely feminine, which is so rare. There are not many women filmmakers in general but even fewer films have that kind of female sensitivity within them. It is extraordinary. Thank you so much for bringing that to the screen.

I have two small questions for you. Being a Russian myself, I first noticed that you work with a Russian DOP (he did an amazing job on YES. It is one of the most beautiful films I’ve seen in a long time.). Then I remembered that ‘The man who cried’ is about a Russian refugee and finally looking on IMDB I saw that you directed a documentary about women filmmakers in Russia. I found that quite interesting and I’m wondering if you have a particular interest in Russia? Also, where could I possibly get hold of that documentary? I would love to see it. I personally wrote a dissertation on documentary filmmakers in Russia.

My second question is personal. Sorry to bother you with this but I was wondering if you could possibly give me some advice. Apart from trying to make my short films I work as a researcher or a ‘visualiser’ for directors of commercials in London (I basically help the directors to develop scripts visually providing them with a range of reference material or suggestions). Even though I like my job, commercials are commercials and I would love to move into feature films. Is there actually a similar role on feature films and how would you get into it?
(my email is anastasia@koshka.tv)

Thank you so much for your time. All the best with your future projects. I can’t wait to see the next one!!!

Best wishes,
Anastasia

russia
My love affair with Russia probably began as a teenager when i started reading Russian literature intensively and then deepened when i was introduced to Russian cinema.
Later, I was lucky enough to visit Russia twice just before perestroika, and then many times subsequently, so was able to witness the transitions.
When reseaching locations in which to film Orlando in Russia I met Alexei Rodionov and worked with him for the first time. Orlando became a co-production with Lenfilm.
The documentary 'I am an Ox' etc is no longer available.
As for your other question: I am not aware of an identical role in feature film development except for certain specific areas of visual research. However that is no reason not to invent one for yourself!
