Thanks for the verse
Just saw Yes... an instant favorite. But the notion of a screenplay in verse is what first drew me to it. Personally, I haven't the abbreviated focus to track short pieces, need the big long stories to nail me down--and, best, modern stories, which leaves only a handful, at least only a handful I've found so far. So my question is this: where's the power? I mean, how can verse first stultify the way it can and then soar over that, to connect the strange, alternative language-way it does? Is it the beat, the marriage of music to narrative? More work, more active engagement, the listeners half-dancing, their hearts cracked open while they're not looking?
Sorry--got carried away. For the second time tonight. Anyway, interested in how you got to the choice of verse for Yes. Pulling back a little, I realise you must have been asked this a thousand times, so feel free to direct me to a previous answer. And thanks again.

verse
i think you have answered your question. there are other discussions of verse - rhyme and reason - elsewhere on this site, but i can tell you that writing this screenplay was a joyful process, a musical one, an intuitive one, and seemed to loosen the connections between love and politics, marriage and loneliness, mathematics and sex...
it was also exhilarating to break the rules, of what a screenplay is thought to be, of how people are thought to speak, and of how stories are supposed to be told.
i came to feel that film and poetry are in many ways the same idiom...distilling chaotic experience, a sudden moment of recognition in a line or an image...
