Medecins Sans Frontieres

Last night we had a preview screening of YES in support of Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders) at the Odeon Covent Garden. The cinema was full and buzzing, and most of those present were either doctors and nurses working in places like Afghanistan and Ethiopia, or office volunteers for MSF, or individual donors for the wonderful, humanitarian work of this independent organisation.

Their UK Chief Executive, Jean-Michel Piedagnel and I introduced the film and then I went back to meet the cinema’s projectionist, Manuel Lopez. It’s an encounter I have had all around the world, in the cramped, noisy backroom where everyone’s work on a film, finally, rests in the hands and in the skill and attentiveness of a person no-one in the cinema ever sees. Framing, focus, reel changes, sound levels, these are in fact the final stages of post-production, and it is a mutable process subject to human and mechanical error.  You can come with me into the booth if you visit my guest director’s blog at the BBC website here.

PS Manuel did a great job, by the way. The projection was beautiful.
